Avon Lake

Two cars were reported broken into Nov. 2 at Avon Lake Public Library and Busch Funeral Home & Remembrance Center.
Avon Lake Police Lt. Duane Streator said a purse was stolen from each car. The thief broke the cars’ windows to get at the purses, which were lying behind a seat and the other half under a seat.
Typically, thefts from cars in the city happen when the owners leave their cars unlocked, Streator said. There were three incidents during this past summer of a “smash-and-grab theft,” one at the new Ellen Trivanovich Aquatic Center parking lot, one at Veterans Memorial Park and another at Miller Road Park.
Sometimes people, when going into different businesses or parks, leave their belongings in the car, thinking it’s safer, Streator said.
“Those thieves target the cars there,” he said.
Though the break-ins at the library and funeral home are most likely related, he said the police can’t determine at this time if it’s the same person from the other break-ins.
Streator urged people to lock their vehicle doors and, if they don’t take their valuables with them, at least make sure they are not visible.
