Avon Lake Public Library calls for photographs

“Images of America:  Avon Lake” is a book of historical photographs to be published mid-2011 by Arcadia Publishing.  This endeavor is a joint project of the Avon Lake Historical Society and Avon Lake Public Library.

For three years, the Historical Society and the library have worked to collect photographs from individuals, families, organizations and businesses in Avon Lake.  Earlier this year, a proposal submitted to Arcadia Publishing by Nancy Nelson Abram on behalf of the Historical Society was accepted.  Both organizations will share authorship.  Proceeds from the sale of the books will be shared between the Avon Lake Historical Society and the Friends of Avon Lake Public Library.

The Historical Society and the Library are still looking for more original photographs, postcards and line art depicting people, places and events in Avon Lake.  All photographs, etc., must be submitted by Nov. 30 so book deadlines can be met

  • Photos should be original, in focus and in good condition. If you prefer to scan photos yourself, they must be scanned as TIFFs at 300 dpi or higher.
  • If you prefer to give originals to the Library, a Deed of Gift form must be completed at time of submission.
  • If you prefer to have originals returned, we’ll scan them and notify you as to when you can pick them up. A Photo Release form, authorizing publication, must be completed.
  • The Deed of Gift and Photo Release forms can be e-mailed to you.
  • As much information as you can provide, especially dates, names and locations, will be helpful.

Not every photo will make it into the book but every photo donated or scanned will remain a part of the Library’s local history collection for present and future researchers.  In addition, many of the photographs will eventually appear online as the library is working with the Cleveland Memory Project at Cleveland State University to catalog and upload Avon Lake images for public viewing.

Those with questions should contact Assistant Director Gerry Vogel at Avon Lake Public Library (440) 933-8128, ext. 239 or e-mail gvogel@avonlake.lib.oh.us.
