State photo contest focuses on quality of life on Lake Erie

The Ohio Lake Erie Commission  is accepting entries for its 25th annual photo contest. The theme this year is “Lake Erie Starts here.”

Photographers may submit photos or photo essays along with a few sentences describing how actions in the photograph are connected to the quality of life on Lake Erie. Besides the quality of the photo, judges will consider how the photo relates to the health of Lake Erie. While short narratives will be required to enter the contest, the quality of writing will not be judged. Ohio Lake Erie Commission staff can work with interested entrants on the written narrative.

“People often ask us what the state is doing to improve Lake Erie. We can tell that story,” commission Executive Director Karl Gebhardt said. “However, an even more important story is that of the thousands of people in the watershed who are taking action to improve Ohio’s greatest natural resource.”

Entries must have been photographed between Aug. 1, 2016 and Aug. 31, 2017. Entry applications and official contest rules can be found at:

A separate youth category is available for those 18 years old or younger.

Entries will be accepted through Aug. 31. Winners will be announced at the Ohio Lake Erie Commission fall meeting. Direct questions to Sandra Kosek-Sills, Ohio Lake Erie Commission (419) 357-2775.
