Avon Lake – Warm Sunday morning rain progressed from pleasant droplets to pouring when Yoga in the Park participants began heading to their cars one by one, some embracing the weather and focusing on their poses.

Twelve stayed through the entire hourlong class, drenched by the end – about half of the community members who had gathered.

Yoga in the Park is a new offering through the Avon Lake Parks and Recreation Department. The free program will run through Aug. 20 at Veterans Memorial Park at 6:30 a.m. Fridays, 10 a.m. Saturdays and 10 a.m. Sundays. All levels of experience are welcome.

At one of the first classes June 4, even kids joined in. In the yoga class, instructor Gail Johnson from New Life Massage & Whole Living Solutions led a relaxed, slow-moving class, promoting self-love along the way.

The city recreation department added 27 new programs in 2016, bringing the total to 48. Courses like free yoga continue this momentum. Upcoming programs and series include the Concerts in the Park kickoff June 18 with the GeezeCats – a ’50s/’60s band – from 6 to 8 p.m. at Miller Road Park, 33760 Lake Road.

Also, kayak rentals return June 8 and will run weekly on Thursdays from 12 to 6 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park.  For more information on monthly guided trips and other upcoming programs, visit avonlake.org.
