Avon Lake

A pair of brothers who were dominant swimmers are members of the 2017 Avon Lake Sports Hall of Fame.

Brad and Ray Bartel both made it to the state swimming tournament while competing for the Avon Lake Shoremen boys swim team during the 1990s.

The sons of Judy and Ray Bartel led the Shoremen to some of the best seasons in school history and their names  are still prominent in the school record book.

Older brother Ray earned four letters while swimming under coach Gary Fahey. He was a nine-time All-Southwestern Conference first-team selection.

He finished second overall in the 100 breast stroke at the 1999 District swim meet, an event in which he would also earn All-America honors. He also earned All-American honors for both the 200 free relay and the 200 medley relay. During his senior year of 1999, Avon Lake finished tenth overall at the state swim meet after finishing 19th in his junior year. He also served as captain of that 1999 team.

Younger brother Brad was also a dominant swimmer. He finished second in the state in the 200 individual medley and fourth in the butterfly and was named all-conference and all-district all four seasons of his high school career.

He still holds the school record in the 200 free (1:45.36), 200 IM (1:49.99), 100 butterfly (50.57), 100 free (47.93), 500 free (4:49.96) and 100 breast stroke (58.58) . He and Ray are both members of the school-record 200-medley relay team (1:38.81), 200 free (1:27.17) and 400 free (3:15.53).

Joining the Bartels in the 2017 class are Erik Mathisen (1997), Shawn Pavlovich (1993); Meg Ryan (2000), Gary Wetherill (1967) and the 1994 boys cross country team.

These athletes will be honored at a dinner and induction ceremony May 20 at the Fountain Bleau in Avon Lake. The festivities will continue the following day with the hall of fame’s 26th annual golf outing at Sweetbriar County Club.

Friends and family members of the 2017 class are invited to attend both events. Reservation forms can be found on the Avon Lake Sports Hall of Fame’s website at www.avonlakesportshalloffame.org. For information regarding sponsorships for either the dinner or golf outing, call 933-2959.
