Brookside athletes and teams to be inducted in sports hall

Two individuals and two basketball teams are among this year’s inductees for the Brookside High School Athletic Hall of Fame, which will take place May 19 at the high school cafeteria.

Rich Flowers (class of 1983) and Brian DeVito (class of 2000) are among the inductees. Flowers was a three-sport star athlete in football, basketball and track and field for the Cardinals between 1979 and 1983. DeVito was also a three-sport standout, playing football, basketball and baseball from 1996-2000.

The Brookside 1990 and 1991 boys basketball squads are also being inducted. The 1990 team was the AA sectional champion and AA district runner-up after going 15-7 for the season. The 1991 Cardinals finished 16-5 and locked up a Lorain County Conference championship in the process.

Jim Hoover, Jim Ott, Jarrod VanHorn, Scott Grove, Tim Mahon and Brent Schremp played for both squads. Other members of the 1990 team include Bret McHenry, Dan Bertelone, Mark Smallwood and Greg Rieth. The 1991 Cardinals roster featured Chad Smith, Chris Frank, Rich Chabot, Steve Hicks, Mark Williams and Josh Farmer.

Ed Wright and Gene Leonard served as coaches in 1990. Frank Olshanski, Jim Piazza, Leonard, Matt Martin and Chris Balyeat served on the coaching staff for the 1991 team.

The induction ceremony will be held at Brookside High School’s cafeteria May 19 with a social at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for the event can be purchased at the BHS Athletic Department daily from 7 a.m.-2 p.m.
